Speaking at a workshop on Industry Defence Linkage - Doing business in the Aerospace and Defence sector, Goa Shipyard Ltd Chairman and Managing Director Shekhar Mital said there is a huge potential for smaller companies to build for the defense and aerospace industry.
“Indian manufactures should have purchase preference. Between 5 to 10 percent of the purchase preference is given to Indian manufacturers. The aim is to encourage the Indian manufacturers who have been struggling over the years to be allowed to enter the sector,” he said adding that 65 percent of the cost of shipbuilding was in material, thus proving to be a huge opportunity.
He added that Goa had direct access through registering with the company. Goa Shipyard during a board meeting held on Friday, approved the decision to allow local vendors to access tenders floated by the nine defence public sector units in the country.
Mital explained that companies that registered through such public sector units aided in specifically being given access to tender they could cater to without risks.
