MARGAO
Efforts by the Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai to recover the huge outstanding rent from the petroleum companies have finally bore fruit on Friday.
After months of negotiations, Bharat Petroleum officials have finally paid the rent arrears to the civic body, pegged at a whopping Rs 57 lakh. The MMC chairperson exuded confidence that the remaining petroleum companies will follow suit and clear the outstanding rent arrears in the days ahead.
Babita told the media that the new Council headed by her had taken a major initiative to recover the outstanding rent from the petroleum companies after assuming office in 2015. "We had taken the initiative after we came across huge rent arrears due from the petroleum companies. A number of meetings took place between the Municipality and the petroleum companies during the last two years, after which the companies finally agreed to pay the rent arrears," she said.
With no documents suggesting the lease agreements with the petroleum companies operating on the municipal owned land, the MMC chairperson said the civic body will now forward to the Director of Municipal Administration draft copy of the lease agreement for vetting before the Municipality executes fresh lease agreement with the companies.
