The PWD will take up urgent repair works at the Assonora water treatment plant and attend to leakages on the main pipeline for two days and therefore Bardez and part of Bicholim talukas will receive restricted water supply on Jan 4 and 5.
Traffic plying to Pernem and Bicholim talukas will also be diverted via Vrundavan Hospital in Mapusa in order to carry out repair of water leakage on national highway (NH 66) at
Karrasvaddo junction, Mapusa.
“There shall be restricted water supply to entire Bardez taluka and part of Bicholim taluka on January 4 and 5 due to shutdown of Water Treatment Plant at Assonora for taking urgent electrical and mechanical works,” a public notice issued by the Executive Engineer of Public Works Department (water) said.
The PWD also said that traffic plying from Panaji to Pernem and Bicholim will be diverted via Vrundavan Hospital, which is 500 metres before the Karrasvaddo junction on the National Highway.
A senior PWD official informed there were leakages at several places on the main pipeline which will be attended to in the two days.
He said the department has activated several agencies and the job will be taken up on war footing to plug the leakages and other allied problems.
“It won’t be a total shutdown. There will be restricted supply and whenever possible water will be released to people,” said Ulhas Kerkar, Superintendent Engineer, PWD.
Several areas in Bardez, particularly Mapusa have been facing water scarcity due to erratic supply of water from the Assonora water treatment plant.
The Mapusa Municipal Council had recently organized a special council meeting to discuss the issue of shortage of water supply in the city.
Several councilors had placed on record the problems faced by the residents due to water shortage.
The PWD Executive Engineer and junior engineers also attended the meeting and placed before the council various issues affecting the supply and steps the department was taking to alleviate the water shortage problem in Mapusa.
