Areas in South Goa will face restricted water supply on January 7 and 8 on account of urgent maintenance works of 160 MLD Salaulim water treatment plant at Xelpem, Sanguem. Repairs of the pipelines will also be simultaneously carried, according to the PWD.
Areas affected will Sanguem, Quepem, Salcete, Mormugao talukas including enroute
villages.
The PWD officials were quick to assure that the shut down may not cause any major disruption in the water supply, especially in areas of Salcete and Quepem.
Reason: The shut down has been taken on the old 160 MLD line to fix leakage issues along the Verna stretch, with Executive Engineer Shrikant Gaonkar saying that though the PWD will take a shut down on the line, water supply will be made available on the line right up to Manora in Raia village.
Besides, Gaonkar pointed out that the new 100 MS MLD line will supply water to the talukas of Salcete, Sanguem, Quepem and Mormugao talukas as normal. ‘Though the PWD has taken the two day shut down, it may only had a marginal impact by way of restricted water supply to the district, especially to the water consumers in Mormugao taluka”, Gaonkar said.
PWD officials pointed out that the 160 MLD old cement line has developed leakages at some places on the Verna stretch, which requires urgent attention. “The shut down is aimed at rectifying the problem and plug the leakages,” an official added.
