The police on Sunday arrested Mahadev Ghadi from Surla-Bicholim for the heinous murder of two elderly sisters -- Mangala Kamat and Jeevan Kamat -- at Ponda.
The murderer was known to the victims and the reason for the killing was due to money borrowing issue, informed Pankaj Kumar Singh, Superintendent Of Police (South) in a press conference at Ponda.
The police had received a telephonic call informing them that the two women were lying in a pool of blood in a kitchen of a flat on the first floor at Super Market Complex Kaziwada, Ponda.
Based on CCTV footage in and around the place of offence and perusing the cell phone data, police apprehended Mahadev Ghadi. During the interrogation, he confessed to the crime. He disclosed that he had taken a loan from the deceased Jeevan Kamat. Since she was pressing him hard to return the amount, he killed her and thereafter her sister Mangala Kamat when she intervened to rescue her.
Ghadi is working as an operator in a private company at Verna IDC.
Mohan Gaude, PI Ponda Police Station and his team under the supervision of SP Pankaj Kumar Singh and DySP Nelson Albuquerque and Uday Parab investigated the case.
According to SP Singh, the accused Ghadi has an addiction to gambling and he had borrowed around two and a half lakh from the deceased Kamat sisters as a loan.
When the accused came to the place of the deceased, they had a quarrel over the money issue and during the altercations, the former decided to kill them. After committing the crime the accused, who is a bachelor, went to his Surla house.
The police said the accused has no criminal background and he knew the Kamat sisters for the last 13 years.
The police are verifying whether anyone else is involved in the crime.
