In what would be its last session before a new House is constituted following the 2022 polls, a two-day session of the Goa legislative assembly will get underway on Monday with very scant business of import listed on the agenda.
The primary goal of holding the session at a time when all political parties in the State are changing gears to poll mode, government sources said was to comply with the Constitutional requirement of ensuring a gap of no more than six months between two consecutive sessions of a State’s Legislature.
According to Legislature Secretary Namrata Ulman, 77 starred and 325 unstarred questions are slated to be tabled during this two-day session, apart from five to six zero hour mentions and calling attention motion notices given by members.
Ulman also said that obituary and congratulatory motions are listed for discussion besides the tabling of the report of the Business Advisory Committee.
Passing of the second set of demands for grants and an amendment to the Goa Preservation of Trees legislation are also on the agenda.
Opposition Leader Digambar Kamat said the Opposition will take on the government on the question of the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the State in the wake of the recent spurt in murders through a calling attention motion. The abysmal condition of the roads in the State will also be taken up, Kamat said.
Meanwhile, the two-day session is expected to witness light-hearted exchanges among the 39 members (one member Luizinho Faleiro gave up his membership to quit the Congress and join the Trinamool Congress) as they will be in the House for the last time before facing an election to return when the next one is constituted.
At the last general assembly election held in 2017, as many as 19 sitting legislators (nearly half the strength) had failed to make it back to the House.
