No politician should be compared to any God or Goddess, said Tivim MLA Nilkant Halarnkar and suggested that comparing Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Lord Ram was equally wrong. Halarnkar, on Sunday, also hit out at former Tivim MLA Kiran Kandokar for comparing Mamata Banerjee to Goddess Shantadurga.
“Anyone can say Modi is ‘like’ Lord Ram but nobody can take the place of God. For Rawat, as an individual, Modi can be his God. But we cannot say Modi is Lord Ram. The PM must have helped him (Rawat) and therefore he must have said that he is God,” Halarnkar said.
The Tivim MLA was responding to a statement made by former BJP chief minister of Uttarakhand, Tirath Singh Rawat who compared PM Narendra Mod to Lord Ram in his first public address as CM at Haridwar. Later, Pushkar Singh Dhami replaced Rawat as the CM of the State.
Halarnkar said nobody can be equated to God and moreover no politicians should be compared with the names of Gods and Goddesses.
“In Hindu mythology Ram is the avatar of God. Ram is not a man. So we cannot compare him with anyone,” he said.
Similarly, he said, “Our ancestors believed that our Lady of Milagres in Mapusa and the Goddess of Lairi are sisters. Our Lady of Fatima and Our Lady of Valankanni are revered by the minority community as God. Nobody can be compared with the name of any God.”
He said Shantadurga was a peace-loving Goddess and comparing the West Bengal CM with the Goddess was completely absurd.
