The ordinary meeting of the Corporation of City of Panaji witnessed chaotic scenes after the Ruling and the Opposition corporators clashed over transfer of land at Bainguinim to the Goa Waste Management Corporation for setting up a state-of-the-art garbage treatment plant.
Following the chaos, Mayor Surendra Furtado said that within the next four days legal opinion would be sought on whether the land could be leased out to the Goa Waste Management Corporation so that CCP could earn some revenue at least.
When the agenda to accord transfer of land came up for discussion during the meeting, Ruling corporators demanded that CCP shall execute a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Goa Waste Management Corporation for utilising the land on a pre-condition that the plant would be used for treatment of garbage within the jurisdiction of CCP and village panchayats of Taleigao and Se Old Goa.
Opposition corporators however contended that as the land was bought and acquired for CCP, it should be immediately transferred to the Goa Waste Management Corporation and non-transfer of the land would further delay the setting up of the plant.
"When the issue of garbage came up for discussion, mayor did not support the transfer of land to the GWMC. Government had handed it over to us for setting up a waste treatment plant. However, the CCP is not in a position to do it, which the mayor also agrees to. If the land is transferred fast, we will get the plant soon. Mayor is only delaying the project," said Opposition Corporator Pundalik Raut Dessai.
Speaking during the meeting, former Mayor Shubham Chodankar demanded stopping of dumping of wet waste at a plant near LIC office.
"Currently 12 tonnes of wet waste is being brought there, even though it can handle only three tonnes. Currently eight wards are being affected with the stink of the wet waste. Why should we suffer", said an angry Shubham and threatened to take to the streets along with the residents of the area, if the issue was not addressed", said Shubham.
