 The primary intention is to secure the high-end equipment for the State Forensic Science Laboratory, Verna. However, the police department is also exploring te possibility of mobile equipment for use during narcotic raids.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Vimal Anand Gupta informed that at present, police rely on the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim for testing urine samples when suspicions of drug use persist.
"GMC has a device which confirms presence of drugs in urine samples. We are now trying to procure similar equipment for the FSL laboratory so that we don't have to depend on GMC or other agencies. Possibility of procuring mobile equipment is also being explored," DIG Gupta stated.
The senior police official also disclosed that Goa Police also intends to examine the possibility of procuring and training sniffer dog breeds known for their efficiency at locating and sniffing out narcotic substances.
Meanwhile, around 30 narcotic cases have been booked by the state police since August 13 following the death of two youths due to drug overdose at two separate party locations in Anjuna.
In these 30 cases, 13 Goans, 13 non-Goans and four foreign nationals have been arrested while a total of 20 kg narcotic substances worth approximately Ra 27.5 lakh have been seized across the state. "We are on the lookout for peddlers and suppliers of illegal drugs. With heavy deployment of police staff, they are feeling the heat and we believe that they have either gone underground or have left the state altogether. Our strategy is to keep the pressure on not to relax," DIG Gupta stated. Goa Police will be monitoring the tourist belt very closely over the upcoming tourist season with a special focus on outdoor parties attracting large crowds. Social media sites will also be monitored to keep an eye on invites and messages for clandestine gatherings.
