The two foreign nationals who were recently arrested on charges of tempering with the Bank of India ATM in Mapusa, on Wednesday, have been re-arrested for being involved in tempering with the State Bank of India ATM at Khorlim in Mapusa, police said.
Soon after the two-day police custody of the two accused Bulgarians ended on Wednesday, Mapusa Police booked the duo in the SBI ATM case and re-arrested them in the evening.
The two were involved in cheating several bank customers by fixing skimmers in the bank ATMs in Mapusa.
At least 40 people including a policeman attached to Mapusa Police Station had complained of losing lakhs of rupees after allegedly swiping their debit cards at a tempered SBI ATM at Khorlim, Mapusa last month.
These people received SMS alerts of cash being withdrawn from their account without their permission.
The money was withdrawn from different areas in Mumbai.
A senior police officer informed that during the investigation the accused were found to be present in Mumbai during the period when the people’s money was withdrawn.
“We are closing the gap. Very soon we will be able to piece all the facts together and arrive at a final solution,” a police official informed.
It may be recalled police had arrested the duo on January 4 after the Chief Manager of Bank of India Mapusa branch had lodged a complaint with police that some unknown persons had connected a skimming device to bank’s ATM and stole valuable date of the customers.
Police zeroed on the two after watching the CCTV footage and immediately nabbed one accused Ivo Petrov Metchenov from his Arpora residence while his accomplice Milen Ivanov Davranski was picked up from the Dabolim airport while attempting to move out of Goa.
During investigation, a skimming device was found in possession of one of the accused and a laptop, six mobile phones, a card reader, external hard disk, router and two skimmers were found with the other accused which was attached by the police.
