A bull landed into a chamber of an abandoned irrigation canal alongside the eastern bypass road near Maruti Temple here on Tuesday evening, throwing up the question of negligence by the concerned departments.
While the bull fell into the chamber at around 3.30 pm, the authorities were on the job to rescue trapped animal out of the narrow chamber.
While the fire brigade and the people tried to reach out to the trapped bull with a ladder, the plan did not succeed given the narrow size of the chamber.
Since those who had made it to the chamber encountered oxygen issues, local MLA Ulhas Tuemkar and others tried to get oxygen from the government hospital.
Late in the evening, a heavy machinery was deployed at the site to rescue the trapped bull. A resident Rajiv Jha said the people and the fire brigade have been involved in the job of removing the bull since afternoon.
The Navelim MLA told the media that he has instructed the police to inquire into the incident and register a FIR against the erring departments.
“The irrigation canal was laid years ago, and which has since been abandoned. But, the question that arises is why was the chamber of the valve not shut all these years. People go for walking along the road. This is indeed a death trap and the concerned officials need to be brought to book,” Ulhas said.
The operation that began at around 3.30 pm on Tuesday ended only at around 10.30 pm, when the bull was finally rescued from the chamber, bringing a sigh of relief to the people around.
