Burglars made good with cash of Rs 9 lakh on Tuesday after breaking into a Bank of India (BoI) ATM, which the police suspect to have been opened with the help of explosive material -- a new tactic now being used by burglars to rob ATMs.
According to Pernem police, the scene of the robbery is reported to have taken place at around 4 in the morning.
The ATM is located a little distance away from Harmal junction on the Pali-Keri road. The burglars used machine blast to break into the ATM. The intensity of blast broke the glass of the
ATM kiosk.
After receiving the report, Pernem police went to the crime scene and began their investigation.
Fingerprint experts and a dog squad was called at the scene. The police are also investigating the CCTV footage from nearby establishment to find any suspicious activity.
Instances of ATMs being broken into, the ATM machine itself being stolen in Dhargal and ATM machines being opened using cutters have occurred since 2017.
The burglaries have been taking place at ATMs
that do not have a watchman on duty. It is alleged that ATMs are insured against robberies and this has made agencies operating the ATMs take a lax attitude towards such incidents.
A case has been registered against unknown persons and police are investigating.
