Burglars broke into a house in Mencurem-Bicholim in broad daylight and while the family was away on account of the Ganesh Visarjan ceremony, decamping with jewellery valued at about Rs 15 lakh.
The burglary took place in the house of Ramdas Naik in Mencurem. Naik and his family had gone to their ancestral home for the Ganesh Visarjan ceremony, leaving their house unoccupied.
Burglars broke into the house sometime between 11 am and 11.30 am, and stole the jewellery.
The burglary in broad daylight shocked the people of Mencurem, with many questioning safety and security in the village.
On receiving information of the burglary, a Bicholim police team went to the site and began investigations. A police dog squad was also pressed into service. Police also detained some workers who came to the village for work during Ganesh Chaturthi and questioned them.
Bicholim MLA Dr Chandrakant Shetye, Mencurem Panchayat members later met the Bicholim Deputy Superintendent of Police to discuss the matter.
There have been calls for increased police patrolling in Mencurem and surrounding areas, while workers from other states who work in the area during Ganesh Chaturthi should also be verified.
