The spate of burglaries in schools have continued in Mormugao taluka as burglars broke into the third school and decamped with cash of over Rs 50,000 from the Keshav Smruti school at Dabolim.
The incident came to light after staff opened the school early Monday morning, only to find the office ransacked and cash missing from the school cupboards.
School authorities immediately alerted the Vasco police who rushed to the site and carried out primary investigations.
Speaking to reporters, Principal Sushma Korgaonkar said petty cash had been stolen from the school.
"Our staff opened the gates and the schoolchildren had entered the school, but when I reached my office, I realised that my cabins were ransacked. Before I could say something, my assistant principal arrived informed me that her cabins and cupboards had been ransacked and cash had gone missing,” said Korgaonkar.
“The principal of the higher secondary school division also came to my office saying that his files have been thrown and cash from his cabin had gone missing. We then realised that cash of over Rs 50,000 collectively, including the petty cash, had been stolen.”
“This is the third school to have been targeted after St Theresa School in Mangor and Infant Jesus Academy in Velsao and schools have become a target for burglars. We request the education department to take note of this and provide us with a night watchman and security and offer us protection with so many schools being targeted by burglars," said Korgaonkar.
The Keshav Smruti school is the third school to be burgled in Mormugao Taluka within the last eight days.
