The burglars targeted the Shree Dev Satpurush temple in Morjim, making off with a cash box containing lakhs of rupees. The thieves took the box to a nearby hilly area, broke it open, and left only Rs 1000 inside, taking away the rest of the cash, amounting to lakhs. The temple committee promptly reported the incident to the Mandrem police station.
The fund box, left untouched by the temple committee for the past two years, is believed to contain donations from devotees, accumulating to lakhs of rupees. Despite the presence of CCTV cameras, they were inactive during the burglary, allowing the culprits to escape undetected.
The daring nature of the burglary has surprised locals, considering Shree Dev Satpurush is renowned as a revered temple in Goa. Many believe the deity will punish the thieves. The temple, known for its Deepotsava Amavasya event, attracts thousands of devotees from across the state and beyond, generating significant donations. Residents are urging increased police patrols, especially at night, to curb thefts in the area.
