With the arrest of a sixth person, Mormugao Police has sent a bus to bring the six accused who were arrested in Odisha and Mumbai after an intensive interstate manhunt, in connection with the armed dacoity at Baina-Vasco last week.

Police sources said most of the accused are residents of Odisha. While around four suspects were apprehended in Mumbai, the remaining two were tracked down in Odisha with support from local police teams. The two accused arrested in Odisha were later brought to Mumbai.

Late Tuesday night, police dispatched a 20-seater bus to Mumbai to bring the six accused back to Goa after obtaining a transit warrant, officials confirmed.

The bus left from Mumbai along with the accused on Wednesday night.

Teams from multiple police stations under the Mormugao DySP’s jurisdiction coordinated with counterparts across states, piecing together technical surveillance, CCTV inputs and intelligence leads to zero in on the gang’s movements.

A portion of the stolen valuables has already been recovered during the operation, and verification of seized gold ornaments was carried out by a police team at the residence of the victim, Sagar Nayak, on Wednesday.

The breakthrough comes less than a week after seven armed robbers stormed into the Baina residence of the Nayak family, assaulted them and escaped with gold and cash worth around Rs 35 lakh.

Officers described the case as a “totally blind and challenging” investigation that demanded continuous work, long hours and swift interstate coordination.

The dacoity, executed with precision by a group armed with sharp weapons, had left the port town shaken. The attackers had forced their way into the flat late at night, assaulted the family members and ransacked the house before fleeing with valuables. The violence and scale of the crime prompted significant pressure to crack the case at the earliest.

Senior officers said the arrests mark a crucial step toward recovering the remaining stolen property and fully dismantling the network behind the operation.

Police are now probing whether the gang was involved in similar offences within Goa or in other states.
