Businesses report surge in use of Rs 2,000 notes ahead of deadline to exchange

Last-minute rush by some users expected at banks today

PANAJI

Several establishments across the State posted notices reminding people that Rs 2,000 notes as these currency notes will not be legal from September 30, 2023.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes on May 19, 2023, and instructed banks to cease issuing these notes immediately.

The RBI also established a deadline for depositing and/or exchanging Rs 2,000 currency notes, which is today, September 30, 2023.

As a result, many establishments, particularly petrol pumps that experienced a surge in Rs 2,000 note usage after the announcement, prominently displayed cautionary notices to inform the public of the withdrawal of these currency notes.

With all the banks working on Saturday, a last-minute rush by some users of Rs 2,000 notes is expected.
