Bypass on stilts: Sardinha urges to adopt resolution in Assembly

MARGAO

Stating that the floods witnessed at Benaulim during the wet spell is an eye-opener to the government and authorities, South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha on Wednesday urged the Goa Legislative Assembly to adopt a resolution in the ensuing sessions to build the western bypass passing through Benaulim on stilts.

He also urged the government to adopt a resolution and send it to the Centre opposing the Mormugao Port Authority Bill empowering the MPA to have jurisdiction beyond the port limits.

Addressing the media, the MP pointed out that the demand of the villagers of Benaulim in support of the bypass on stilts has been vindicated by the recent flood situation in the village.

“It is high time the Goa Assembly adopts a resolution and send the same to the Centre and build the bypass on stilts,” he said.

He added: “I had raised the bypass issue at Benaulim in Parliament. Since the recent floods have proved beyond doubt that the bypass sans stilts will result in waterlogging and destroy agriculture, the government should immediately take up the matter with the Centre”, he added.

Sardinha said it is a shame that the Capital city which prides itself as a smart city was inundated by floods, sending a wrong message to the visitors. He said the government should take corrective measures instead of indulging in a blame game.

He also took potshots at the government for its promise to remove potholes from the road, saying the time has come for the government to explain not the number of potholes, but if any road exists in the State sans potholes.
