It was all along believed in local circles that the NH-17 will be bypassed at Sarzora near the Village gate restaurant, running parallel to the railway line, diverting the heavy traffic along the existing highway passing through the market.
PWD officials now say that this proposal has not found favour with the Centre. In fact, a senior PWD official pointed out that the existing NH-17 will continue till Uskinibandh near the NUSI hospital before it is diverted in the fields to
wards Veroda, where it would run parallel to the railway line and come out after the Balli Primary Health Centre. "As per the proposal, the existing NH-17 will come right near the Uskinibandh near the NUSI hospital before it is diverted through the fields via a bypass. This will help stop all inter-state and heavy traffic from entering the Cuncolim market," the official said.
In fact, the official pointed out that the consultant is right now on the job to ascertain the number of culverts that would be required to build a bypass via the Uskinibandh and Veroda. The consultant will also conduct a survey whether the bypass would necessitate acquisition of residential structures and accordingly prepare estimates for the bypass from Uskinibandh to Balli PHC.
Incidentally, when The Goan called up outgoing Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik to shed light on the proposed NH-17 bypass, he was quick to point out that the previous government had approved the bypass along the Sarzora-Veroda-Balli route. "What was approved during the previous tenure will not cause destruction to any house or structure. The proposed bypass passes through the fields from Sarzora before it comes out near the Balli PHC," Rajan said.
The outgoing Cuncolim MLA, however, expressed concern that the proposed Uskinibandh-Veroda-Balli route may result in demolition of structure and may pass through thickly populated area of the town. "We will soon call on the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to find out the NH-17 Cuncolim bypass alignment. We feel that the Centre should stick to the Sarzora-Veroda-Balli bypass," he said.
Rajan recalled that the Cuncolim Municipal Council had adopted a resolution way back in 2002-2003 opposing the NH-17 bypass passing through Culvado-Comba alignment before it comes out at the Cuncolim police station.
