Fomento Green CEO Sridhar Kamat, however, said that the waste treatment plant at Sonsodo is functioning as per the requirement, adding that the waste rejects from the plant are dumped on the existing site for want of a landfill site and because the plant receives unsegregated waste from the city.
Accompanied by members of the Citizens for Sonsodo, the Curtorim MLA, who celebrated his birthday on Wednesday, made his presence felt at the dumping site around noon, to take stock of the situation at the site in view of complaints received from the citizens about the worsening situation at the site.
While expressing his unhappiness over the ongoing work at the waste treatment plant, Reginaldo said people of Curtorim are suffering because of the delay in tackling the mess at Sonsodo. “This is not a personal fight against anyone. There are not ego clashes with anyone. The fight is to clear the waste and remove the eyesore. My people are suffering,” he said.
Asserting that the HPCC and the sub-committee should continue with the process set in motion by GSUDA to get the waste removed through bio-remediation, Reginaldo said all the concerned authorities should concentrate their energies to get the existing waste removed.
When asked whether the government is justified in spending an amount of Rs 5 crore on bio-remediation when there’s a treatment plant in place, Reginaldo said the company was required to tackle the existing waste, but lamented that nothing is happening on that front. “The company only segregates the waste and is not treating it. This plant should have taken up the waste treatment and not just waste segregation,” he said.
Fomento Green CEO Sridhar Kamat, however, has begged to differ. He pointed out that bio-remediation of the existing dump has not been part of the Concession agreement. “As per the agreement, the company was to carry out segregation of the existing waste. We had started the work by setting a trammel at the site, but the work could not continue since the Margao Municipality expressed its inability to cart away the rejects as per the agreement,” Sridhar said.
