PANAJI
The Calangute panchayat is in the process of preparing a detailed register of biodiversity in the jurisdiction of the beach village.
The Peoples Biodiversity Register (PBR) which details the flora and fauna forms within the village as well as its land uses and human activities will be prepared by Calangute’s Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC).
The BMC of the Calangtue panchayat said that it is in the final stages of completing the PBR and therefore called on the residents of the beach village to come forward to add any new details in the register.
As per the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, one of the main functions of the BMC is to prepare the PBR in which the biological diversity including preservation of habitats, conservation of land resources, folk varieties and cultivars, domesticated stocks and breeds of animals and micro-organisms and chronicling of knowledge relating to biological diversity of the area is documented.
Calangute Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira in a public notice has urged the residents to submit any additions to be included in the PBR by September 20 either in the panchayat office or any of the BMC members.
The Calangute BMC is headed by Benedict Lobo (chairperson) and the following are the other members: Premanand Diukar (vice-chairperson), Clotilda Braganza, Augustine D’Costa, Ciril D’Souza, Anthony D’Souza, Clara Coelho and Joyce D’Souza.
