With the administration at the Saligao solid waste treatment plant putting its foot down refusing to collect mixed waste from November 1, Calangute Panchayat has decided to begin door-to-door garbage collection from one ward in the village on a trial basis.
"We have decided to collect door-to-door garbage from individual homes of Naika-vaddo on a trial basis to experiment the collection of segregated waste," said Calangute Sarpanch Anthony Menezes.
The decision was taken at the fortnightly meeting of the panchayat members on Friday.
The sarpanch said two small bins will be provided for each household - one each for collection of dry and wet waste.
"Calangute Panchayat has no experience on door-to-door waste collection. But since the official at the Saligao waste treatment plant has set a deadline, we have no alternative but to collect segregated waste," he said.
He said panchayat garbage collectors will move around the locality with two large bins, while locals will have to dump their dry and wet waste in the bins separately.
It may be recalled that the officials manning the Saligao waste treatment plant was finding it difficult to treat the waste, as most panchayats were sending mixed waste at the treatment plant.
The officials have now told the panchayats that only segregated waste will be accepted at the treatment plant and have extended the deadline for collection of segregated waste up till November 1. Calangute Panchayat has also decided to organize its bio-diversity committee meeting on October 27. "I am planning to invite experts to create an awareness on the functioning of bio-diversity committee among the members of the committee," Menezes said.
