Calangute p’yat cracks down on illegalities, seals shops for mismanagement of garbage

MAPUSA
In an ongoing campaign against illegal activities in the coastal village, the Calangute panchayat conducted a surprise inspection of the local fish market on Saturday.

During the inspection, the panchayat authorities sealed approximately seven chicken shops for mismanagement of garbage and for operating without the required permissions.

Calangute Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira informed that the decision to inspect the chicken shops followed concerns regarding the waste generated by these establishments.

A previous meeting had been held with chicken shop operators within the Calangute panchayat jurisdiction, where discussions centered on the issue of waste disposal.

The waste produced by these shops, particularly chicken waste, had reportedly not been accepted at the waste treatment plant, exacerbating the cleanliness problems in the area.

“We visited the market and conducted a site inspection to verify whether the shops had the necessary permissions to operate, and to check where their waste was being disposed of,” Sequeira explained.

During the inspection, several shops were found to be in violation of waste management protocols, prompting the panchayat to seal them.

Some of these shops were also discovered to be operating without the required licences and permissions.

The sarpanch emphasized that the closure of these shops was part of an effort to restore discipline and ensure better waste management in the village.

“These actions are necessary to clean up Calangute and maintain order. We will continue such drives to prevent unauthorized businesses from operating and to tackle illegalities that are affecting our village,” Sequeira said.

The panchayat has made it clear that it will remain vigilant in enforcing rules and regulations to keep the village clean and free from unauthorised activities. Sarpanch Sequeira assured that the entire panchayat body was united in its mission to rid Calangute of illegalities and to ensure a cleaner, more disciplined environment for both residents and visitors.
