Calangute to get uninterrupted power, water supply: Local MLA

MAPUSA
Stating that the local panchayat and government must work in tandem to complete development works, Ports Minister Michael Lobo on Friday assured to provide uninterrupted water and power supply to Calangute.

“After great difficulty, land to build the necessary infrastructure for power and water has been acquired in the village. We will ensure that Calangute residents get uninterrupted water and electricity supply,” Lobo said.

The Ports Minister was addressing the media after the re-election of Shawn Martins as the new sarpanch of the coastal village.

Lobo informed that a well-heeled resident of the village agreed to sell land to set up the electricity sub-station at a low price. The sub-station is expected to come up at Boa Viagem.

Lobo further stated that the water treatment plant will be set up next to the industrial estate in Pilerne.

He said the estimate, technical sanction and administrative approval for the project was obtained within 15 days.

“We will complete the process of issuing the tender, getting expenditure sanction and work order in one month. Work is going on a war footing. Once it is done, water will not be a problem for Calangute and Saligao constituencies,” he said.

The Ports Minister informed that in the last four years a lot of work has been done in the village which was never done in Calangute before.

“New roads have been constructed and several other roads have been widened,” he said.

He also admitted that some works like the sewerage system was still incomplete and will be taken up soon.

Earlier, Shawn Martins was re-elected unopposed as the sarpanch of the village for the second time in the current term of the panchayat. He was first elected as the sarpanch of Calangute in 2018.

Martins took over the reins from outgoing sarpanch Dinesh Simepurushkar who remained in office for just about five months.

This is the fifth sarpanch election in Calangute Panchayat in just about four years since the new panchayat team came to power in 2017.
