Retired DIG, Goa, Bosco George, IPS has on Thursday underscored the need to introduce traffic education in the school curriculum along with environmental studies and sex education to impart basic traffic concepts before the students pass out of the schools and apply for the driving licence.
The retired top cop has also called for bringing the driving schools under close monitoring by the enforcement agencies and NGOs to ensure they impart not just the practical training but conduct classes for the applicants.
Delivering a talk on “Citizens’ role towards Road Safety” organised by the Movement for Amity Towards Roads in Goa (MARG) at the Margao Municipal hall on Thursday, George said the time has come to take up with schools as well as parents how youngsters ride their way to the schools on two-wheelers.
“Allay the misconceptions that the informant will be hauled up or will be cited as a witness for informing an accident to the police,” George said conveying the accident to the police would help in saving the life of the victim.
Saying that it is very easy to obtain a driving licence, George suggested that the youngsters should be made to pass through a rigorous test before they are issued a driving licence. “Organisations such as MARG need to take up the issue. We cannot rely on these driving schools. One can still get a driving licence without attending classes. We need to check the driving schools, whether they have classrooms, instruments and whether they invite police and enforcement officers as part of the training program.”
