Congress MLA Reginaldo Lourneco has demanded to know whether the district disaster management machinery was in place at Canacona when the southern areas of the taluka were hit by flood like situation on
Saturday night.
Reginaldo, who visited the affected areas at around 2 am on Sunday, pointed out that he found only a fire tender stationed at one of the areas. "Even the people who took shelter in a local chapel had move to the place of worship on their own. There was no presence of any
official around the area," he said.
Reginaldo pointed out that he had tried to call the Canacona police station in-charge as well as the deputy Collector, Canacona, but lamented they were not available on their phones. "May be they were busy in the taluka, but they did not take my phone when I was trying to find out from them about the situation," he said.
The Congress further pointed out that when he visited Canacona health centre in the wee hours of Sunday, he found that the health department did not requisition additional doctors or nurses to tackle any emergency. "If any tragedy had to occur, the health centre would have been ill-equipped to deal with emergency since there was no additional manpower," he told the media on Monday.
