Residents of Mastimoll in Canacona, frustrated by erratic water supply for the past eight months and a complete stoppage for the last four days, met PWD (Water Supply) officials on Thursday along with their ward councillor to seek an immediate remedy.
Residents stated that they previously enjoyed a reliable and uninterrupted water supply, but for the past several months the situation has deteriorated sharply. “Eight months ago, we used to get 24-hourwater supply. Now, we receive barely half an hour to one hour of water, and sometimes only two buckets, with no fixed timings. This has made life extremely difficult. And now, for the last four days, the supply has stopped altogether,” said one of the women representing the group.
Ward councillor Pandurang (Dhiraj) Naik Gaonkar, who accompanied the residents, said he had repeatedly approached PWD officials but received no clear response.
“Why this problem is not being addressed is a big question. If this is not harassment of the public, then what do we call it? Officers keep passing the buck, but no one takes responsibility to fix the issue,” he said, warning that he would lead a morcha to the PWD (Water Supply) office if the issue is not resolved within two days.
A PWD (Water Supply) Junior Engineer acknowledged the problem and said it was linked to the locality’s higher elevation, which results in reduced water pressure, especially when power cuts interrupt pumping operations and overhead tank levels fall. The JE said he had inspected the site and taken up the matter with senior officials. “We expect to resolve this issue at the earliest,” he assured.
