Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in force since the onslaught of Coronavirus pandemic have been relaxed in the State with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) lifting the cap on the number of visitors visiting the protected national monuments and heritage sites in Goa.
Though issued after the Old Goa feast, the order will help tourists visit churches during Christmas. There are around 21 monuments of national importance recognized by the ASI in Goa which include famous churches like the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Se Cathedral, and St Cajetan Church.
The Basilica of Bom Jesus is part of the Churches and convents of Goa UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Earlier, there strict restrictions were imposed and many visitors were refrained from visiting these places.
The Goa government had allowed reopening of religious places on June 8, but many such places, including churches, were reluctant to do so fearing spike in coronavirus cases. Churches had been closed for public worship since the enforcement of the lockdown on March 24.
With the number of active cases of Covid coming down on daily basis, there has been a steady influx of domestic tourists intio the State this tourist season. The order will boost the tourism business as a large number of visitors can now visit these monuments.
As per the new guidelines, concerned superintending archaeologist has the right to fix the number of visitors to be allowed at the sites under his jurisdiction. The superintending archaeologist has to consult the state administration through the District Magistrate and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Committee.
The sale of physical tickets will resume as SOP allows it.
