Captian Viriato Fernandes, social and environment activist and state convenor of the recently formed Goencho Avaaz Party, on Friday, announced his decision to contest the upcoming assembly elections against Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho from the Dabolim constituency.
Speaking to reporters, Capt Fernandes said he never harboured any political ambitions but took the step at the request of the party and the persistent demands of people in the Dabolim constituency.
"My goal was to address various issues plaguing Goa. The core committee of GAP directed me to prepare to contest from Dabolim constituency, which has been systematically destroyed in the name of development.”
“Dabolim constituency is reeling under severe destruction due to greed of political leaders and this has motivated me to contest the upcoming assembly elections. My only objective is to make a positive change in partnership with people. I am also hopeful that together we can usher in an era of clean politics in Goa," said Fernandes, an engineer by profession and who recently retired from the Indian Navy.
