Stating that the ongoing road expansion work of NH66 has made commuting risky along the highway, the Shiv Sena held an impromptu protest highlighting the deficiencies of the State administration and the highway contractors in taking necessary safety measures while executing road widening work along the stretch from Hotel Green Park to Patradevi at Karrasvaddo, Mapusa.
“Around a fortnight back we had given a memorandum to the highway officials highlighting the need of proper signboards along with the ongoing work on the highway between Hotel Green Park junction to Patradevi demanding necessary safety measures including signboards, installation of barrels with fluorescent tapes. To our horror, till today nothing has been done,” said Jitesh Kamat, President of Shiv Sena, Goa unit.
The Shiv Sena chief along with his party supporters held a two-hour protest blocking the road widening work of the highway at Karaswada, Mapusa against the highway contractor for failing to ensure safety and endangering the life of commuters.
Kamat said that due to the irresponsibility of the contractor and poor planning of the State administration the stretch from Green Park to Patradevi had become accident-prone.
He said around a fortnight back the Sena had forwarded a memorandum to highway officials highlighting the need for proper signboards between Hotel Green Park junction to Patradevi.
“We demanded the need to implement necessary safety measures including erecting of signboards, installation of barrels with fluorescent tapes etc but surprisingly nothing has been done till date,” Kamat informed.
Accusing the government of being insensitive, he said, with the commencement of rain commuters will have a tough time negotiating the highway especially during the night.
The protest ended only after a public relations officer of the NH66, Nikhil Kale assured to take necessary safety steps in the next eight days.
