The incident came to light after locals noticed some foreign nationals clicking photos of the dead Olive Ridley early Wednesday morning. Going by the foul smell, locals suspected that the turtle may have died a few days before being washed ashore at Agonda beach.
Speaking to The Goan, a local Fernando Fernandes suspected that the turtle may have been making its way to the Turtle Reserved beach of Agonda, before it got caught in some fishing nets or motor blades of mechanized fishing vessels close to the Agonda beach and got killed.
“Authorities have remained mum as several mechanized fishing trawlers carry out fishing activities very close to the shore. These fishing activities are prominent at midnight and in the wee hours.”
“Turtles proceeding to the shore to lay eggs fall prey to such activities,” Fernandes added.
Fernandes further stated that dolphins have also died after getting caught in the motor blades of mechanized trawlers and fishing nets.
“The dead turtle washed ashore on Wednesday was one such victim,” Fernandes added.
