As part of the 31st National Road Safety Week 2020 being observed from January 11-17, GOACAN on Tuesday organised an ‘Awareness Action on Road Safety’ along with the students of Carmel Higher Secondary and Carmel College for Women outside the college gate at Nuvem.
The students who were mobilised under the banners of Consumer Welfare Club of the HSS and Consumer Welfare Cell & NSS Unit of the college enthusiastically participated keeping in mind the theme of Road Safety Week “ Bringing change through youth power.
Students carrying banners, placards and colourful flags appealed to the two-wheeler riders to wear ISI marked helmets for their personal safety and make it a habit to fasten the helmet strap securely.
Students who were also witness to riders riding their bikes at excessive speeds have resolved to write to the various authorities to install speed limit signages along the road in front of their institution.
GOACAN coordinator Roland Martins said the students also appealed to drivers and co-passengers of cars to use their seat belts always as these are in fact ‘safety belts’. The students got an enthusiastic response from the drivers as they were in fact expecting to be fined and but instead got advice on safety from the youngsters.
The HSS students were led by CWC coordinators Manjusha Talwadkar and Diana Rodrigues e Coutinho and the college students were led by CWC coordinator Gladys D’Souza and Rovina Fernandes - NSS progamme officer in charge and were supported by GOACAN volunteers Lorna Fernandes, Martin Rodrigues, Joaquim Vincent Vaz, and Silvester Niasso.
Later the HSS and college students took a pledge on the campus as part of the National Road Safety Week activity and have planned to take the road safety movement ahead in the forthcoming academic year 2020-21 as well.
