Addressing the media in the presence of activists from other villages, Carmona villager Allwyn George, however, made it clear that the towers will have to be removed immediately after the summit, warning that the villagers will not tolerate any mischief from any quarter. “We reiterate that no structure will be allowed to be erected anywhere in the village for the purpose of the towers, but only trucks can be positioned at locations far away from residential areas,” Allwyn said.
He said the service providers will have to give an undertaking to the panchayat to remove the towers immediately after the summit ends. “We remind all the stakeholders that villagers of Carmona are law-abiding citizens united on the issue and no attempt should be made to destroy the peaceful atmosphere in the village,” he added.
The villagers pointed out that BRICS cannot be used by the government to pursue the unholy agenda of Reliance Jio for erecting mobile towers disguised as water tanks in an attempt to capture the entire telecom space in Goa. “Villagers hereby demand that the company immediately dismantle its camouflaged illegal mobile tower atop the building near the panchayat office as the gram sabha has decided to disallow mobile towers in residential areas,” he said.
“Reliance has violated the provisions of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act 1994 by erecting this illegal tower without mandatory permissions from the panchayat,” he said, while requesting Reliance Jio to look for an alternative site agreeable to all in consultation with the villagers, promising to fully cooperate with the company.
The villagers have threatened to march to the offices of the GSPCB, Reliance Jio and Director of Panchayats if the company fails to remove the tower immediately.
Social activist from Cavelossim Irish Passainha told the media that the gram sabha has opposed the proposal to erect five towers in the village ahead of BRICS since the village enjoys a relatively good network from the existing
five towers.
