Carnival festivities kickstarted in the State with the carnival parade being staged in Porvorim on Friday evening.

Colourful scenes, lively rhythms and the vibrant spirit of the participants were on display at the Carnival parade, which began from the Art Park. In all, there were 23 floats comprising 7 family floats, 11 floats of clubs and institutions, and 5 traditional floats. Besides, there were 27 fancy dress participants.

There were no motorised vehicles and no generators, as the carnival was celebrated in a traditional way and King Momo was on a bullock cart. Hundreds of people watched the carnival parade on both sides of the road.

Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte flagged off the carnival parade in the presence of Saligao MLA Kedar Naik, ZP member Sandeep Salgaonkar, Penha de Franca Sarpanch Swapnil Chodankar and King Momo Cedric da Costa.

Speaking on the occasion, Khaunte stated that carnival celebrations were started in Goa in a traditional way in 1965.
