Seeks presidential intervention, strict action against attackers
The Catholic Association of Goa (CAG) has condemned the recent attacks on Christians during Christmas celebrations in parts of the country and demanded strict action against those responsible.
Led by its president Cyril Fernandes, office bearers of the association met Governor Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Friday and submitted a memorandum highlighting the community’s concerns. The association also requested that the memorandum be forwarded to the President of India.
Fernandes told the media later that the community has urged the President to seek a detailed report from the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister on the incidents.
“The President is the constitutional head of the country. This matter falls within her jurisdiction,” he stated.
The memorandum stressed that Christians have always contributed to the nation’s progress and should not be treated as second-class citizens.
“No one should doubt our patriotism. The Constitution guarantees us equal rights,” Fernandes said.
He added that Christianity, like all religions, teaches peace.
“If there are objections to our faith, they should be voiced openly. But no one has the right to take the law into their own hands,” he said.
The association warned that unchecked attacks could harm the country’s unity and economy. It called on the government to impose strict sanctions on perpetrators and ensure such incidents do not recur in Goa or elsewhere.
The meeting with the Governor marks the first formal step by the association to escalate the issue at the highest constitutional level. CAG leaders said they would continue to press for accountability and protection of minority rights.
