Bengre, the notorious gangster from Betim was allegedly stabbed to death by Vinayak Karbotkar, a prisoner under trial at the Central Jail in Colvale on July 26.
The jail guard and the police had taken Bengre in an ambulance for medical treatment. However, doctors at District Hospital Mapusa declared him dead on arrival.
Jail’s CCTV footage acquired by the investigating team from Crime Branch shows Karbotkar indulging the deceased in a conversation outside his cell while showing him some newspapers. While Bengre was busy reading the paper, Karbotkar moved behind him from the left and stabbed him in his neck, the footage shows.
Following a departmental inquiry, the then Colvale jailor Satyavan Tari, assistant jailor Babu Kharvet and two jail guards Nilesh Chari and Sameer Patekar were suspended for lapses. TGN
