Karbotkar was accused of killing another gangster Ashpaq Bengre in the central jail, Colvale, six months earlier and was shifted to Sada sub-jail following this incident.
Margao Court had granted transit remand to all and after securing the court warrant. Crime Branch officials proceeded to take the three under trials Mohammed Shaikh, Rahul Kumar and George Fernandes into custody.
Karbotkar was murdered on January 24, 2017, following an alleged skirmish between two groups of inmates.
The inmates had turned violent at night after dinner and had damaged the jail building. Lights and electrical fittings were smashed and a clear CCTV footage was unavailable to nail down the offenders.
Karbotkar’s body had sustained several severe injuries which were listed as blunt force trauma in the post mortem report. The report
hinted at the use of an object such as a stick in assaulting Karbotkar.
Crime Branch team fixed the blame on the trio upon conclusion of the tedious process of recording
statements of around 30 inmates, jail staff and other police personnel, whose services were availed in bringing the situation under control on the fateful night.
