There appears to be a concerted effort to get the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) to offer rehabilitation for the slum dwellers of Camrabhat in Panaji, in an apparent bid to win over the community ahead of the assembly elections.
At its meeting on Friday, the CCP approved the appointment of a project management consultant to work on rehabilitating the slum dwellers in Camrabhat.
The consultant will be given a task to survey the slum area and will have to come out with a plan to rehabilitate the slum dwellers with the help of private fundraising plans.
The rehabilitation of the slum dwellers in Camrabhat has been on the agenda of different governments since the last decade.
There were plans to rehabilitate the slums through the Goa Rehabilitation Board (GRB) in 2014-15, but the civic body did not approve the plan.
Camrabhat comprises 300-plus housing units and has nearly one thousand registered voters.
A large number of shanties have sprung up in the area with blessing of politicians who use them as vote bank. The area is prone to floods and gets submerged during monsoons.
The CCP meeting on Friday also approved to send a proposal to the State government for approval of development works worth around Rs 5 crore.
The council also approved the enhancement of film shooting fees in the city and extending the services of 92 contact workers for six months. Usually, the services of contract workers are extended for three months.
