In the backdrop of the Goa Municipal Employees Association call for a one-day strike on Thursday the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) in a meeting on Monday decided to stand by its order and not bow down to the demand made by the employees association.
The workers union had given a call to go on strike opposing the order issued by the Commissioner last week mandating CCP staff to work on Saturdays, whenever required.
The CCP meeting has also decided to have talks with the Goa Municipal Employees Association president Keshav Prabhu to convince him to call off the strike.
While explaining the motive behind the order, CCP commissioner Ajit Roy said that “Ultimately CCP staff is here to serve people. If required, the government servant has to come to work on Saturday,” Roy said.
Meanwhile the CCP meeting on Monday approved a decision to auction annually the rights to harvest the fruit-bearing trees in its jurisdiction.
As per the survey done by the CCP garden supervisors, there are around 87 mango trees in the area belonging to CCP.
Raising the point that there may be more fruit-bearing trees, some councillors demanded to have another tree survey done.
The meeting also gave approval for increasing the rent as per PWD rates for the commercial establishments in the Praca de Commercial and Municipal Building.
The CCP also granted permission to the City Gas Distribution Network to lay the gas pipeline in Panaji along a 13.4 kilometer stretch.The proposal to rename ‘Salvador De’Souza “ Rose Garden’ was deferred without taking any decision.
There was also a proposal to change name of this garden to ‘Salvador De Souza Martyrs of Panaji Memorial Revolution Park' and the 15 pillars inside the park be named after the Pinto Revolt of the Portuguese era.
