CCP demolishes semi-permanent shops in Tonca

Legal action by civic body executed following orders from court

PANAJI

The demolition squad of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) on Friday demolished a handful of semi-permanent shops along the old Miramar-Dona Paula road near Hotel Goa International.

These shops, including a liquor vendor, were demolished following legal proceedings in court, and there was no injunction against their action from any other court obtained by the owners, an official at the site said.

CCP Mayor Rohit Monserrate, when contacted, said that the action of the civic body was taken in the course of the routine functioning of the administrative arm following court orders.

At the site, meanwhile, there was some commotion when the excavator arrived to carry out the demolitions. Owners or individuals associated with these demolished shops sought to argue with the officials that these structures had been existing for several years.

However, the CCP officials at the site said they should have approached the courts for relief.

“Since there is no such stay granted by any court, we are conducting these demolitions,” the official said.
