PANAJI
Workers of the Corporation of the City of Panaji were on Sunday working at multiple locations to desilt drains which cut through some of the city’s main thoroughfare roads.
Over the last few days, multiple drains which cut across MG Road and are crucial connectors to the side drains of the network which facilitates the flow of storm water into the Mandovi river were desilted.
Sources in CCP’s technical section said the work of desilting roadside drains was completed before the monsoon, but cleaning up the cross drains which cut across the roads and are covered with steel meshes could not be done because ‘smart city’ work was being carried out.
“These cross drains are being desilted now whenever there is respite from the rain. All the cross drains will be cleaned up over the next week,” a senior official from the technical section said.
He said that the desilting of the cross drains is crucial in the drainage network, which ensures the flow of storm water into the river and prevents flooding in the city.
