Ministry of Railways is preparing master plan for the redevelopment of Vasco Railway Station along with other stations under the South Western Railways (SWR) like KSR Bengaluru, SSS Hubballi, Mysuru, Mangaluru Central, the approval for which was given by the Cabinet.
The Union Cabinet has also given approval for redevelopment of some railway stations in New Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
The approval was given during the meeting that was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.
The Union Cabinet approved Indian Railways’ proposal for redevelopment of three major railway stations in New Delhi, Ahmedabad and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai, with an approximate total investment of nearly Rs 10,000 crore.
Work on redevelopment of 199 stations is also going on. Of these, tenders have been issued for 47 stations while master planning and design for the remaining is underway. Work is progressing fast for 32 stations.
Some of the standard elements of station design for Vasco and other railway stations will include a spacious roof plaza with all passenger amenities at one place along with spaces for retail, cafeterias and recreational facilities.
Both sides of the city will be connected with the station, with the station building on both sides of Railway tracks. Facilities like food court, waiting lounge, playing area for children, place for local products, etc will be available. The stations like Vasco located within the city will have a city centre like place.
To make the stations comfortable, there will be proper illumination, signages, acoustics and lifts, escalators and travelators. Green Building Techniques will be used, with solar energy, water conservation and recycling and improved tree cover.
