Accusing both the BJP governments at the Centre and State of having failed to resolve the mining issue, All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary and Goa desk in-charge Dr A Chellakumar on Thursday assured that the Congress party would raise the issue in parliament.

Dr Chellakumar, who sat along with protesting mining dependents on the grounds at Jantar Mantar on their third and final day of their protest in New Delhi, extended his support to their cause and said the Congress party would always be with them to ensure they get justice.

Later speaking to The Goan over phone from Delhi, Dr Chellakumar said both the BJP governments in Goa and the Centre had failed to resolve the mining issue.

“Both governments failed completely to restart mining activity. When they are in power, they should have done something to restart

the mining.”

“We are fully supporting their cause. This is an issue pertaining to the livelihood of Goans and hence, it should be resolved,” Dr

Chellakumar said.

He assured that the Congress members would raise the issue in parliament.

“We are fully with the mining dependents and will support them to get their justice. Our party MPs will raise this issue in parliament and will force the government to discuss their issue,” said

Dr Chellakumar.

Former chief minister and Navelim’s Congress MLA Luizinho Faleiro also extended his support to the agitating mining dependents at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

“Everyone knows that how mining dependents have been suffering. As such, the governments should work to work out solutions and resolve the issue,” said Faleiro.

Faleiro also assured to meet Congress President Rahul Gandhi and put forth the grievances of the mining dependents.

Others who addressed the mining dependents included Opposition Leader Babu Kavlekar, Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar, NCP leader Jose Philip D’Souza and Goa Surakhsha Manch leader

Subhash Velingkar.
