Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Deepak Naik on Tuesday challenged city councillor Krishna (Daji) Salkar and councillor Rochana Borkar to resign from the council and get elected on their own, before withdrawing support to the council.

It may be recalled that during recent media briefing, Salkar had alleged that MMC chief officer and chairperson were agents of the local MLA, adding that he along with Borkar have withdrawn their support to the council.

Responding to the allegations, Deepak said they had formed a BJP-backed panel and all the ruling councillors, including Salkar and Borkar, were elected because of BJP backing.

“If they think that they got elected on their own, then they should resign from the council and get elected on their own,” he added.

Referring to the allegations made by Salkar that there is a money scam in the council and Chief Officer Deepali Naik and Chairperson Deepak Naik are agents of the local MLA, Deepak said there was never a money scam in the council. “On the contrary, the council which was facing financial crunch could come out of the situation due to the help of the local MLA,” said the chairperson.

“It was because of the assistance and help of the local MLA that the council got an award as cleanest council from the Governor.”

“Salkar has been elected thrice and knows how with the help of local MLA the council manages to get funds from the government for the day-to-day running of the council and to say that we are agents of the MLA, Salkar is totally wrong,” added Deepak.

“We are not involved in any money scam. One wonders if Salkar was involved in such scams when he was Vasco Planning and Development Authority chairman, for him to assume that everyone is involved in scams,” said Naik.
