Chandor villagers on Sunday demanded that the railways go for a rail overbridge to overcome traffic woes at the railway crossing and demanded denotification of the State Highway SH8 passing through the village, saying the State highway will lead to destruction of the heritage structures in the historic village.
No final decision could be arrived at over the question whether there ought to be an underpass at the level crossing or a flyover, with MLAs Nilesh Cabral and Clafacio Dias giving
Cuncolim MLA Clafacio Dias said he would call for a joint meeting of both Chandor and Guirdolim villagers to arrive at a consensus on the contentious issue of railway crossing. Sarpanch Celina Furtado later told the media after the meeting that the SH8 highway should be scrapped saying it will not be in the interest of Chandor and the village heritage.
Sunday's meeting was attended by Chandor Sarpanch Celina Furtado, her Guirdolim counterpart Mallisa Carvalho, besides the two MLAs and villagers from both Chandor and Guirdolim.
Villager Joy D'Silva suggested that the railways should built a rail overbridge to avoid congestion, saying it will not affect anyone and will not involve acquisition of additional land. "The Guirdolim gram sabha had settled for an underpass with 2.2 meter height. This subway will prevent plying off school buses or a fire tender. Hence, the railways should build a rail overbridge as a solution," Joy said.
Another villager Darwin Cardozo urged the two MLAs to stop the SH8 passing through the village, reminding that Chandor is a historic village, having many heritage structures in the village.
In his address, Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral said the villagers ought to be practical given that the double tracking will soon become a reality. "The demand for a rail overbridge is not practical simply because the entire rail alignment will have to be changed for kilometres together. This will not be acceptable to the railways," Nilesh said.
He further pointed out that the flyover at the railway level crossing is not practical, saying that it is not possible for three road droppings. He, however, threw a challenge to the villagers to prepare a plan for a flyover at the existing level crossing.
"I am of the firm opinion that an underpass with a 2.2 metre height is the best solution," he said.
Heated exchanges ensued between Cabral and a local villager after residents took offence to a remark made by the MLA when he said that the villager, who had issued a statement to the media about the feasibility of a flyover at the level crossing, should have the guts to come in front and lay bare the plan. Cabral, however, later apologised for his remark, but hastened to add that he had not intended to insult the villager, but was only throwing a challenge given that a flyover is not feasible at the crossing.
Both Cabral and Clafacio promised that they would together work to denotify the SH8 highway passing through the village.
