In what seemed like a Diwali bonus, a large crowd from in and around Baina was shocked on Monday evening after an ATM started delivering excess cash.
Sources said that many people had arrived to withdraw cash and almost everyone got excess money from the ATM, sometimes more than double.
Several people who wanted to withdraw Rs 5,000 have been believed to have received Rs 12,500 and as the news spread far and wide, a huge crowd began arriving at the ATM from distant areas of Mangor and other places.
Finally, ward councillor Ramchandra Kamat, who got to know about the happenings, called the police who in turn called in the bank officials and shut down the ATM.
"I was shocked when I heard that the ATM was delivering excess cash, and I called up a few persons who confirmed the incident. I then arrived at the site and was shocked to see a huge crowd almost fighting to enter the ATM. I immediately alerted the police about the faulty ATM and they contacted the bank officials, who arrived at the site and shut down the ATM."
"We are not sure how the bank can recover the excess amount that was withdrawn, but several people here said that this was for the first time an ATM had offered them a Diwali Bonus," said Kamat.
