Over 45 days after eight Congress MLAs joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, the opposition party on Tuesday said they will file a disqualification petition against this fresh batch of defectors.
“We have received the required documents from the office of Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly, based on which our party will file a disqualification petition against the eight defectors,” Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Amit Patkar said.
Former State Advocate General & current Congress MLA from Aldona constituency Carlos Alvares Ferreira has been tasked with drafting the disqualification petition against his former party colleagues.
A group of eight Congress MLAs led by Digambar Kamat and Michael Lobo had joined the BJP in mid-September which reduced the strength of the party to just three in the Goa Legislative Assembly. The eight Congress MLAs crossed over to the BJP in a “merger” of the two legislature parties.
The switchover was a repeat of the events that unfolded three years ago when two-thirds of the Congress MLAs defected to the BJP in a post-midnight visit to the Speaker’s office.
