Chicalim panchayat will soon get a hi-tech machine worth Rs 10 crore from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) as part of its CSR activity to enable the panchayat handle wet waste in its jurisdiction.

Speaking to reporters, Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho said a meeting was convened to discuss garbage issues confronting panchayat bodies in the close proximity of Dabolim Airport.  Various plans were chalked out to handle garbage issues in the panchayats of Chicalim, Chicolna-Bogmalo, Velsao-Pale-Issorcim and Sancoale.

“Segregation at source and door-to-door collection at all these panchayats is being given due importance, and after that is done I have asked the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) to clear dry waste immediately which is piled up.”  “Naval colonies, Nofra 1 and 2, have given a small piece of land in their area where we will dig pits and handle wet garbage,” said Godinho.

The minister also informed that the Comunidade has helped Chicalim panchayat with a piece of land at Alto-

Chicalim.

“Chicalim panchayat will now get a machine to handle wet waste garbage which costs around Rs 10 crore. I had earlier met Union Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu and had insisted that the AAI take up some projects thorough CSR,”

Godinho said.

He informed that the machine would help handle all wet waste, while dry waste would be taken by the GWMC. “We expect a garbage treatment plant to come up in Verna in around 18 months. Actually, it could have been put on fast track as we already had earmarked land, but due to some complications, we are now looking for another piece of land in the Verna Industrial Estate,” said Godinho.
