The riverine villages of Orlim, Loutolim and coastal Betalbatim joined the chorus of opposition against the proposed nationalization of rivers, coal transportation and plan to make MPT a coal hub.
Loutolim gram sabha went a step further and passed an unanimous resolution opposing the development of jetties, apprehending that the upgraded jetties will be used for the transportation of coal in the future.
The gram sabha chaired by Sarpanch Inacinho Fernandes discussed the contentious issue of river nationalization and transportation of coal. Members vehemently opposed the twin proposals with a request to the Sarpanch to forward the resolutions to the authorities concerned and the government.
Gram sabha member Joaquim Gracias said the members had given prior notice to the panchayat to take up the issue at the gram sabha. He said the issue was discussed at a previous meeting, but no resolution was adopted at that meeting.
At the Orlim gram sabha chaired by Sarpanch Tamica Da Silva, members unanimously adopted a resolution opposing nationalization of rivers, coal transportation and MPT as a coal hub.
After much discussions on the issue before the adopting the resolution, members told the panchayat body to send the resolution to the authorities concerned for action.
The issue also echoed at the gram sabha of the coastal village of Betalbatim on Sunday. The meeting chaired by Sarpanch Constancio Miranda passed an unanimous resolution opposing river nationalization, coal transportation and the coal hub at MPT.
The Sarpanch told The Goan that the resolution will be forwarded to the government authorities for necessary action. He said the proposal opposing the nationalization of rivers, coal hub and transportation was submitted to the gram sabha in advance.
