Literature students studying in the Third Year at Chowgule College (Autonomous) on Friday had one of their three internal assessment sessions conducted by the English Department. Contrary to what most students face on assessment day, the TY lit students at Chowgule’s had a fun, entertaining and colourful day, with Latin American food and music to boot!
“Students who opt to study Latin American literature used to find it very difficult to understand the cultural context of the literature they were studying since they knew practically nothing of the region,” explained their lecturer Delilah Pacheco.
So after racking their brains on how to make the course more interesting and less burdensome for the students, their lecturers came up with the idea of having a Latin American Day. Friday’s was the third edition of the day.
The lecturers decided to assess them on what they were presenting for 20 marks.
The 16 students were divided into groups of 2, and each group selected one Latin American country to work on.
Held outside the college canteen, visitors walking through the “Latin American Gallery” experienced the cultures of Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Chile and Puerto Rico. Games like Rana from Colombia, and Cubilete from Cuba got visitors competing against each other for the prized pudding.
Meanwhile, a short distance from the Latin American Gallery, visual literature students from the Second Year had also set up models to explain the several graphic novels they were studying.
